Thornton F. McElroy papers, 1862-1872.

This collection consists of T.F. McElroy's correspondence, contracts, orders & invoices for the printing he contracted as the Territorial Printer. The contracts have a stamp that is initialed by McElroy and Evans. The collection includes ledger pages of costs for incidental printing for the Legislative Assembly, Legislative Council and other offices that required printing. Included is a receipt of R.W. Moxlie, Sheriff of Thurston County, WA to T. F. McElroy for Eliza A.H. DeWolf, plaintiff and John R. Fleming, defendant, dated Nov. 16, 1862.

Daniel Richardson Bigelow was born March 21, 1824 in Belleville, New York. He joined a wagon-train and headed west on the Oregon Trail to Portland, then sailed up the coast in the schooner Exact to Puget Sound in Nov. 1851. He established a law practice in Smithfield (now Olympia, WA). On June 18, 1854, he married Ann Elizabeth White, the first school teacher in the area. Elwood Evans was born about 1828. By the early 1850's he was living in Olympia, WA. He was one of the first attorneys to practice in Olympia.
